Definition

Literal meaning of תֵּבֵל (tēḇēl)

Hebrew lexicons commonly define it as:

  • inhabited world
  • habitable earth
  • productive earth
  • the world where people dwell

It is not the Hebrew word for “planet,” because Biblical Hebrew has no word corresponding to the modern astronomical concept of a planet like Earth.
